How is Spam Skip set up?
Spam Skip is set up by Ambit New Media. There is no software to install on your own computer. There are no changes to make to your email settings or within email software such as Outlook Express.
There is no charge to set up Spam Skip if your mail is handled by Ambit New Media or one of its partners. If your mail is not hosted by us, you can still use Spam Skip but there may be a set up charge of £25 + VAT.
How does Spam Skip filter my mail?
In order to deliver mail to [email protected], the sending mail server will look up the mail server that handles mail for the domain mycompany.com. Once it has found the address of the mail server, it will send its message.The address of the recipient mail server is held in an "MX record" in the domain's setup. If we change that MX record to point to Spam Skip, your mail will start flowing to Spam Skip for filtering. We then set up your account in Spam Skip so that the filtered mail is sent on to the your mail server (i.e. to the server in the original MX record).
Your domain's details are held on two or more "name servers". These are computers on the Internet that can tell enquirers which computers on the Internet handle your web site, your email or any other Internet service you have. Your ISP can make changes to the entries in your name servers, or you may have been given details of a control panel when you registered the domain name.
Your MX records (as there should be at least two) will define your main mail server and a backup, in case the main server is unavailable. The entry is the address of the server, such as mail.ambitnewmedia.net. The sending mail server will look up this address by going to the name server of ambitnewmedia.net. Here it will be told the pysical address - the IP address - of the mail server to use.
By changing the main MX record in the file for your domain (the "zone file") we can point your mail to any mail server you choose. For Spam Skip we point it to mxcluster.points2.com and then tell Spam Skip to send cleaned mail to your mail server.
